Methinks Presents NYC Roadtrip6 [66]
New York City In the Parks Archival Installation
Manhattan, New York City, USA
We arrived in New York safely and rested. On the day of arrival exploration of a number of locations around the city was conducted for the upcoming Archival Installation. Upon returning to the hostel work by 86 artists was mounted on custom made clip hangers and mounted on the Portable Wall Unit.

We left the hostel at 10 am Thursday October 26. Our first installation took place in Washington Square Park. Dozens of onlookers stopped to check out the display. A large portion of the audience was comprised of NYU students because of the fact that their campus is situated around the park. NBC news and a movie crew added to a “what is going on here?” type of vibe in the park.

After 5 hrs in the park we moved, via dolly, to Union Square where we remained for the duration of the day. Union Square audience proved to be diverse and plentiful. Business man on their way into the subway, tourists shooting pictures and skaters who were just enjoying the spot were just some of the people who took some time to check out our Archival Display.

This installation took place in congruence with the Methinks Presents Roadtrip series For details on Methinks Presents Roadtrip series please visit: http://methinkspresents.org

Scotiabank Nuit Blanche
Performance Unit Archival Display Installation
Toronto, Canada
Even without the collaboration of the weather the first Toronto all night contemporary art thing turned out to be an amazing experience both from the onlooker and participant perspective.

The rain only added to the experience and made it comparable to the night of the blackout where thousands (.5 milion) of people came out into the streets and enjoyed a night of human creativity.

Our installation moved around three locations. We occupied two locations on Bloor Street and one on Philosophers Walk near Fujiko Nakaya’s Fog in Toronto #71624.

All the artists whose work is a part of our archives should know that the general public loved your work. We saw people from all walks of life enjoy various pieces. People took photographs, and took down information on various artists and the project (artist information was provided above each piece on display)

Methinks Presents NYC PoStCaRD Show
Performance Unit Installation
25th 7pm: The Gladstone Hotel, Art Bar
26th Noon - 6pm: The Harbourfront
27th Noon - 6pm: Kensington Market, Car Free Sunday

NYC PoStCaRD Show was a truly unique exhibition located at three different sites throughout Toronto's great urban landscape. Our good friends at Methinks Presents have organized a diverse show of work by various artists in a post card format. Everyone who participated had their work seen by various people in and outside the Gladstone Hotel. At the Harbourfront Centre during the Indy Festival. And at the Kensington Pedestrian Sunday. Each installation was unique in weather conditions, random public, and moments of opportunity.

Our hats are off to Mr. Ringer for having the great idea of shining a stage light from the Art Bar in the Gladstone Hotel onto the Performance Unit situated on Queen St. W. Many Thanks to the Organizers of the Indy Festival for inviting us to set up in their tent. And Last but defiantly not least, Thank You Very Much to the Organizers of the Kensington Car free Sunday for being extremely accommodating and helpful with our installation and takedown.

Methinks Presents Montréal Roadtrip
Montrιal Exchange Network Initiation
Montréal, Canada
The Montréal Exchange Network initiative went very well. We had the pleasure of meeting Louis Rastelli, Director of Distroboto and Jean-Pierre Caissie , Artistic Coordinator of Dare-Dare and discuss with them what they are about and what we are in the process of establishing as far as the Exchange Network initiative. All the organizations are in the process of expansion and growth, which makes the future very exciting. Beating the pavement we talked to many other cultural producers in Montréal from the streets of St- Laurent to the Concordia University downtown campus.

On Mr. Rastelli's suggestion we picked two locations in Montréal to install four Mini Ex-net Units packed with 107 art pieces donated by artists and 200 of The Vendart Project zines in both official languages. The units at L'Utopik (552, rue Sainte-Catherine Est.) are still there but units which were installed at the front lobby of Articule (#105, 4001 Berri) are currently M.I.A. Please note that since then Articule has changed locations to 262 Fairmount Quest.

Fifty more copies will be dropped off along with a Mini Ex-net Unit at a third location in Montréal in the month of August.

Artist who participated: BooArt , Lizz Dexik, Kate O'Shaughnessy, Sickthsense, Andrzej Tarasiuk and various anonymous participants of the What do Kids Think Installation

Sickthsense at the Clothing Show - Performance Unit Archival Display
Toronto, Canada
The Performance Unit Public Archival Display was integrated into the Sickthsense space during yet another successful Clothing Show. Archived work from the previous New School University Exchange Network Expansion installation donated by eleven artists was up for display to a crowed of over ten thousand people. This was the 3rd successful Archival Display Installation. We gathered a lot of important data which we will implement in upgrading the Performance Unit and the display system. We also took this opportunity to showcase the New York City Important Housing Laws poster donated by Centre of Urban Pedagogy during the second Exchange Network installation.

Artist work shown by artists (Toronto): Sarah Dryburgh, Janet Attard, Jennifer Elgie, Gosia Komorska, Alicia Santamaria, Jenna Macleallan, Anja Capel, K.J. Moore, Trevor Smale, Boo Art, and Sio.

Methinks Presents NYC5 Roadtrip
New School University Exchange Network Expansion - Stand-Still Installation
New York City, U.S.A.
For the fifth time in the past two years we were able to bring work from artists in Toronto and expose it to the people of New York City . A total of 229 pieces were donated by 11 artists from Toronto . Having archived 31 pieces, 199 were packed into zip lock bags and placed inside the Yellow Exchange Unit at the New School University. We also brought over 220 Art Making Packages which contained a promotional zine and two pieces of illustration board meant to encourage participation in The Vendart Project. One hundred of those were placed within the Yellow Exchange Unit.

Artist who participated: Sarah Dryburgh, Janet Attard, Jennifer Elgie, Gosia Komorska, Alicia Santamaria, Jenna Macleallan, Anja Capel, K.J. Moore, Trevor Smale, Boo Art, and Sio.

The Vendart Project met with Rosten Woo, Director of Programs for the Center for Urban Pedagogy (C.U.P) ( www.anothercupdevelopment.org ). This is a non-for-profit organization based in Brooklyn , N.Y. The center creates “Educational projects about places and how they change”. 80 Art Making Packages were exchanged for 36 large educational posters, our first official art exchange with New York City artists. The Art Making Packages will be distributed to the center's various student participants. C.U.P. is also willing to help us spread awareness about our future projects as well as help us find locations to install future Exchange Units within the Brooklyn community.

Professor Glenn Wharton of New York University's Museum Studies / Conservation Center of the Institute of Fine Arts, directed our attention to the Grey Gallery's exhibit “ The Downtown Show, The New York Art Scene 1974 - 1984” (www.nyu.edu/greyart/exhibits/downtown/dthome.htm). To quote Professor Wharton in regards to The Vendart Project “… (I) certainly support your project's aims. The world needs more Art and Ideas. The Exchange Unit installations are fabulous…”

The Trane Studio
Sickthsense End Of The Year Showcase - Performance Unit Installation
Toronto, Canada
Margaret Saliba experimented with an out-of-sight-on-stage performance where she utilized The Performance Unit as a means of continuing her wallpaper installation works.

She was contained within the unit, out of sight as she renovated the interior of The Performance Unit. The audience was able to witness only the movement of the walls and sounds coming from within anticipating the augmentation of the unit.

This performance hinted at the activity inside in pursuit of modifying its interior. Whereas, the previous wallpaper installations took place on the streets of Toronto as a means of brightening the dullness of the city.

Many other artists showed their work and performed on stage during the Sickthsense End of the Year Showcase. The works were available to be seen until March 20th.

Parsons University Exchange Network Initiation - Stand-Still Installation
New York City, U.S.A.
Having arrived late in the afternoon on Friday we decided to install the new Yellow Exchange Unit on Halloween Monday. The unit is a continuation of the Exchange Unit series, designed for maximum exposure for the Art and Ideas contained inside and contains no technology.

We walked through Central Park, taking scenic shots of the unit, on the way to Parsons University. There we met with Andre-Philippe R. White, Academic Advisor, who welcomed us and showed us the student space in which we installed the unit. It is a central space where students from all disciplines come and work on their projects. We left behind 269 pieces of art and ideas provided by 9 Toronto based artists and 50 pieces from “What do kids think?” Art Making Station Installation at the Art Gallery of Ontario this past summer. All of the Art and Ideas were gone within a week.

Artists: Christine Magsalay, Nick Firan, Mike Parsons, Nik Dudokovic, Millie Knaff, Marianna Casasanta, Matt Gale, SIO , and K.J. Moore.

Galapagos Art Space
The Performance Unit Lunch - Stand-Still Installation
New York City, U.S.A.
Since the main performer was busy getting ready for the evening's performance at the Galapagos Art Space, Sio stepped in and preformed a live Dodalism, chalk on sidewalk drawing using The Performance Unit as a means of framing his performance within the public space. The artist worked in the zombie theme of the show that was about to take place inside Galapagos which encompassed dead body outlines, fake guts and blood on the streets. It was a zombie filled night of art, performance, film, and terror that was caped off with a dance party at Northsix.

The wind was vicious and once the rain came down the square was cleared out. We still had a lot of fun and were happy to interact with the business community.

Many were grateful for the opportunity to had their work archived and distributed in future installations.

Over the Brooklyn Bridge - Site-to-Site Performance Installations
New York City, U.S.A.
During a 3hr walk through neighborhoods of Manhattan that looked like something out of a Tim Burton film, eight Torontonians and one Pink Exchange Unit made their way towards the bridge. There were sections of the walk where we were literally chocking on the fumes from the highway as the taste of concrete settled into our mouths, it is hard to believe that people live in those areas of the city. By six am the unit was installed on the Brooklyn side of the bridge by one of the main supporting arches. The sunrise over New York City made the grueling walk worth it.

In the Subways and @ PS122 - Site-to-Site Installations
New York City, U.S.A
A sick campaign of limited edition Vendart [The Vendart Project] posters (127) commences in Downtown of Toronto two weeks prior to the trip. Seven days of upgrades to the frame and sound system of the unit with the help of George Docherty, Integrated media technician at O.C.A.D.

On the way to PS122 Gallery in New York City people interact with the unit and its contents. The unit was installed outside on the street without any supervision for the duration of the performance at the gallery. We interacted with a diverse group of people in the New York City subways for the second time around, even bumping into a few people who remembered us.

The Unit was also installed in the front of the Hostelling International NYC building, on the Upper West side of Manhattan . The new subwoofer and speaker's blasted the sounds of “Sonic Youth” to the delight of young and old. We did not get their permission to use their music; we did so because we felt that it was appropriate within the context of the installation and because we think that they are an awesome band.

Since we never got a permit we were asked to leave the square. With a 20 ft shift onto the side walk the unit continues to distribute Art and Ideas, from public property to the public.

O.C.A.D Transit Space
Fusion - Stand-Still Installaiton
Toronto, Canada
The Pink Exchange unit is installed within the Ontario College of Art and Design (O.C.A.D.). The purpose of the show was to get students to discuss how important is it to create a stronger O.C.A.D. community. Does the construction of the new building change the fundamental things about O.C.A.D? Some of the more serious changes were the disappearance of the atrium and the park area within the school, which further fractured the O.C.A.D. community. Unfortunately only a small number of the student community participated in the show.

Once realizing that the Art and Ideas inside the unit are free to the public, people took what they liked. A bar installation in “The Hole” turns out to be one of the most insane nights of the trip; “your mother” is spray painted on the back of the unit.
